Sports, available to everyone

Updated: Jul 8, 2021

Sports and physical activities are available to everyone, regardless of size, weight, culture, personality or any other features that differentiate human beings. These differences include physical and mental disabilities, as well as their combinations. The point to be highlighted is that it is a “sport”, no matter what the conditions of the individual practicing it.

Benefits are widely known and supported by research. Besides the physical aspects (improving the cardiovascular system, muscle mass growth, strengthening the immune system, among others), psychological and emotional benefits are significant (improving self-esteem, stress management, developing cognitive processes, greater self-confidence). Practice of sports is also crucial as part of the socialization process.

As an added value for people with disabilities, sports contribute to the inclusion and rehabilitation processes. Also, they encourage people with disabilities to use and improve functioning of those parts of the body that are not affected. A more positive relationship with their own body is promoted.

For children, physical activities provide the opportunity to share with their parents, friends, and peers, allowing them to participate and enjoy games. Frequently, these children are exposed to messages of “What they cannot do”, whereas sports encourage them to develop their potential.

Just like any athlete, people with disabilities may participate in recreational sports, be a member of a club, or get into high competition, depending on their interests and skills.

There are national and international institutions that organize events, classified in different categories, each with strict evaluations, controls, and rules, in order to guarantee equal opportunities.

In Venezuela, there is a great movement that promotes the participation of people with disabilities in different sports, through their respective associations and federations. Information can also be found in special education institutions or organizations for the disabled.

Venezuela’s first participation in the Paralympic Games took place in Barcelona-92. Since then, it has had representation in all the following games. Even though performance has always been outstanding, the goal is not just to reach the high competition. Participation in recreational, school, and community sports should also be encouraged, since the benefits and enjoyment of physical activities belong to everyone.
